Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit tipping over not e. canliculi

TanyaA

New Kit
My 5 year old mini lop started tipping over about 10 days ago. I've had a rabbit before that had head tilt/ear infection and this seemed different. He tips to the right and then can't get back up again...or he really struggles and often pees himself in the process (pain)?
Of course I immediately brought him to the local (famous) veterinary hospital. They did a physical exam, blood work, e. canliculi test and CT scan with contrast. The CT scan did show heavy ear wax build up in the right ear into the middle ear. All other tests were negative for anything like infections, fractures, dislocations, tumors, etc.
He's been on antibiotics for about 10 days and was on antiinflammatories until yesterday. I think, maybe, the antiinflammatories were helping a little bit. The antibiotics aren't helping yet.
When I asked about getting the wax removed, the vet said it was in too deep. After two visits and numerous conversations with three different "exotic animal" specialists there is no known cause. It has been suggested it might be neurological and I could have a neuro expert do tests. Such as a herniated vertebral disk or vertebral bone spur.
I the meantime he's getting pee on his rear end. I'll give him a butt bath tonight. I have brought him to work the past two days because I can't bear to think of him tipping over all day and peeing on himself (I'm lucky, I'm a high school science teacher and no one is allergic). I am *desperate* for advice. I want him to get better and don't want to give up on him, but I can't have him by my side 24-7. Help!

My first thought was 'ear infection' but that or ruled out. Seeing that he was looked out throughoutly and nothing really came out it is possible, imo, that he might have had a stroke or it is indeed someting neurological.

Apart from that I cannot say anything smart but I can give hugs to the poor bunbun and wish him to get better.

Given that the tipping is to the right and the CT scan revealed heavy wax build up in the middle ear on the right it seems likely the two are connected.

What antibiotic is your Rabbit on and have the symptoms worsened again now that the Metacam has been stopped ?

With regards to nursing care, unfortunately in these situations it is going to be a 24/7 job. Does he do a full roll when he tips over and does he have nystagmus (flicking eyes) ?
