Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. random rabbit seizure/fit, help!

Young Bun
hi, about 5 minutes ago I went outside and my rabbit was having a random fit/seizure, he was rolling over and groaning and he couldn't control his body and he was also shivering, I have him in our house now but he is a lot better than he was but he is just staring into space and shivering but when I go to stroke him he jumps and then goes back to staring "into space" and shivering, I don't want to take him to the vets just yet as it may have just been a one off thing that wont affect him in the future but I just want to ask if you have any ideas on what it could be and what to do.( he is a blue eyed white rex wider.)

Personally I would be taking him to the vets straight away. Seizures are a serious occurrence in bunnies, as well as very distressing, and it could re-occur. There could be several reasons for it. Even if it might not affect him in the future, it sounds like it is affecting him now as he has not bounced back to his normal self.

From what you've described - the shivering, staring into space etc - your rabbit is not 'fine'. You sound like you have a very poorly bunny and one who needs veterinary attention ASAP :(

Vibes for your bunny. I hope the vets can help him/find out what happened x

jemima, I have called the vets but they are saying that they are really busy but they will see uss first thing in the morning, but if he has another seizure or his condition gets worse, to book an emergency appointment at the vets to go as soon as I can, thank you , as it is quite hot where I am, it could have been that he got over heated but I'm not sure x

Yikes how scary. I agree a fitting rabbit is very serious, I'd be wanting to take him to the vets this evening.

:? Hmm. Surprised at your vet's response, I wouldn't have thought they'd have turned him away. There isn't another rabbit-savvy vet nearby you could go to, is there? I'd personally not be happy going without veterinary attention tonight, as he sounds quite poorly and, as you may know, bunnies can go downhill very very quickly and succumb to their illnesses with little or no warning. Are you going to keep him inside tonight? I definitely would, make him as comfortable and calm as possible. Poor little lad :( Does he have any existing health conditions?

Sounds like you need to get to the vet ASAP, even if it means an emergency visit. It also sounds like you should change to a rabbit savvy vet.

I don't think your vets are rabbit savvy. Where do you live? Your rabbit really does need to see a vet tonight.

yeah me too, there is another vet nearby but I have used them before and they are not very good, I know he has a recessive gene which can make their teeth go wonky and means they can't eat properly and they could end up dying but it hasn't affected him, he is about 1/4 years old so it would be a shame to loose him, :( yeah I am going to keep him in tonight so I can keep a watch on him x

I want to find a vet more rabbit savvy, but a lot of the vets around me are not rabbit savvy unfortunately x

I'd definitely try the ones VB posted. It WILL be expensive, but at the end of the day your bunny needs to see a vet and he is suffering if not.

It sounds like you're trying your best and clearly care about your boy, but I can't stress the important of a vet visit.

Sending all my vibes for your little lad - good luck x

which edge of Bedfordshire?

If its the northamptonshire side there is an excellent vet in Northampton, if the Cambs/Beds border there is a fabulous exotics and rabbit specialist vet in cambridge, and if the side down towards leighton Buzzard etc I know there is a specialist there that rainbow Rabbits go to.

So you have quite a choice!

I would say after a fit he MUST se a vet tomorrow and a GOOD rabbit savvy one who will do diagnostics to see what the cause was.

Hi guys, i decided to take him to the vet my neighbour suggested that they use and the vet said it could be ESD ( extreme stress disorder) i think it could have been this because earlier my neighbour said he saw a fox trying to get into the run he is in which could of gave him a panic attack which caused the fit he was having, thanks for the help guys :) the little guys ok for now luckily, although they said if he has any more fits to get him straight back to them x

I live closer to leighton buzzard in arlesey, my neighbour suggested one near luton which we ended up going to but it is very good and quite cheap too x

I don't believe there is any way of knowing exactly why a rabbit has seized without doing any tests. I am not experienced in this area, though, so maybe I am wrong. I would not be particularly happy with this diagnosis. What did the vet do when you went to see him? How is your rabbit now?

Have you kept your rabbit indoors for tonight? If there is a fox around please make sure your setup is 100% secure. Has your rabbit got a safe place to run to?

How is your boy today?

The fox will come back. Is there any way to keep your little one inside?

i'm going to put extra wrie around the hutches and runs to make sure he can't get in, and also put a sensor light out the so if he comes near, the lligh should switch on which my neighbour has said scares the fox away usually, I kept him inside last and he seems a lot better, thanks x

he took some blood tests and we should be getting the tests back later today, he also checked his legs and the rest of his body and he said his heart was beating too fast and also his leg muscles were really really tense, he also gave him some injections to slow his heart down a little bti and also to help relax him. I did keep him inside last night and he seems a lot better than he did last night and he's acting like his normal self again.

yeah it is secure at the moment but I am going to put some more wire around the run and also make sure all the doors are secure. he does have some where to run to if the fox gets into the run and I know if he's out there now because I put sensor lights out there which don't pick up the rabbits but they do pick up the fox. fingers crossed he will be ok soon. :) xx
