Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Farore is poorly... She is gone.

I was away Friday night with my OH looking after the buns. My OH says she was perfectly normal up until yesterday evening when I got home.

Last night she was eating fine and acting normal but there were a few very odd looking poos, looked like a mix of Cecal and normal poop or very sloppy normal poop. There was a small amount stuck to her tail which I wiped off. This is very unusual for her she always has good poop and her bum is always spotless.

This morning I went in to check on her and she seemed bright and happily took a fenugreek crunchie and ran off with it. I topped up the hay and gave them a little readi grass which she hopped over and started nibbling. Happy that the poop was a one off I left them too it.

Now she seems depressed, is not interested in food even fresh forage but will nibble if encouraged to. I've given her some fresh food and she has just eaten a fenugreek crunchie, about 3 or 4 pellets a few bramble leaves and has run about a bit (mostly to avoid me sticking food in front of her face or trying to feel her tummy) but when left alone she settles under their little table and looks miserable.

I can feel a lump in her tummy :( she is obviously uncomfortable with me feeling her tummy. Can gas feel hard, or a blockage maybe?

She is spayed.

My plan now is to clean them out so that I can monitor her poop closer, encourage a bit more food, syringe some water and leave her half an hour and if no improvement phone emergency vets. Or does the lump mean I should be bundling her into a carrier and heading out now?

A 'lump' within the GI tract is very abnormal so personally I would be contacting the Vet straight away.

Sending vibes for her.

She has pooped but they are terrible :( she now won't even eat a fenugreek :(

Phoned OOH and we are leaving in the next 5 minutes

I know :(

Oh no no no

Sending lots and lots of vibes for the special girlie :(

Thanks guys, I am home but they are still at the vets. I really liked the vet I left her with, I also liked how she asked me if it was ok for me to leave both her and Loki as it is better for them to stay together. I was just about to as if it would be ok if he stayed too!

The 'lump' had progressed to just a hard stomach my poor girly is so bunged up :( she is also going to be having bloods done as she has lost a lot of weight very very quickly. She had her jab a month ago and the vet was thrilled at how much better her arthritis was and how much weight she had put on... :(

I don't know much at the moment as as soon as she felt her tummy the vet wanted to keep her in, so the examination part of the consult was actually very short. Hopefully she will have had the gut motility drugs and have had the bloods taken by now. The vet said she would phone me in the next couple of hours with an update and to say what if anything the bloods show. She was also thrilled that Farore was insured so that she could just do what was needed without having to phone me and query every little cost.

I love my vets!

Now just sat here looking at my phone :(

Noooooo nooooooo noooooo!!!

Beautiful Farore. Lots of nose rubs. :(

Still haven't heard anything :( admittedly she said she would phone in a couple of hours and it's barely been three since I left them...

I hope she is feeling better :(

Spoken to a vet. My poor girl has had 2 blood tests and an x-Ray :( she is a very poorly girly.

There seems to be quite a lot going on with her so I will try to remember everything they said.

Her main issue is a severely impacted caecum. They think it has been building for a while but hasn't shown any symptoms of it other than weight loss because she is on daily pain relief anyway. So she only acted ill once it was basically full of solid matter which has blocked the rest of her up and there is also a small impaction in her stomach which the vets think is secondary to the caecum impaction.

Her bloods have shown slight anaemia and a high white blood cell count which shows she is under the weather it also showed something else high which had something to do with the kidneys suggesting that she isn't drinking enough. Which in itself could have a lot to do with why the impaction has happened in the first place.

I'm also worried that anything kidney related could have been made worse by her daily metacam. She is on a different pain relief at the moment, one that is stronger and won't compromise her kidneys more, I am thinking vetergesic although she didn't actually say.

Her treatment plan is pain relief, gut motility drugs and lots and lots and lots of fluids, she has a drip and is being given oral fluids in the hope of getting everything hydrated and moving again.

The vet clearly stated that she was still a very sick rabbit and that if fluids aren't enough then we have limited options, she doesn't recommend surgery as apparently it is very risky with a very low success rate but she did say there was another drug that some specialists have suggested may help but that it was a last ditch effort kind of thing as the side effects could be worse than what it was treating. I didn't ask what it was called though, I just didn't think to :(

Farore is likely to be having more X-rays to monitor her and to check if anything is beginning to move and they will phone again in the morning.

Apparently she has her own dedicated nurse overnight to keep up with the fluids, to tempt her with food and to count poops.

I am still hoping to have her home very very soon :( sorry for the essay it was a lot of info to get over the phone and writing it down helped.

Oh bless her and your vets/nurses.

We both have everything crossed for her. Nose rubs and bunny cuddles. :(

I'm so sorry that she is so poorly, I hope she responds to treatment.

It it helps any I had quite a long discussion with our vet (Frances Harcourt-Brown) re long-term Metacam and potential effect on kidneys (Binky was having a medication review for daily Metacam) and she said she doesn't believe that there is any risk of kidney damage and is quite happy to prescribe long-term Metacam even to bunnies with known kidney problems.

Thanks guys.

The vet did say that once better she could resume her daily metacam. So it's nice to feel confident that it isn't harming her!
