Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pneumonia :(

Amylou1985

Young Bun
Took my bunny to the vets this morning for her follow up appointment after being spayed and it couldn't have come at a better time as over night her breathing began to sound more and more like a drum you could hear it loud and clear from the other side of the room :( I said straight away to the vet and the vet said how clear she could hear the noise with out even taking her out her carry case. She listened to her chest and advised that it didn't sound good and dispute eating she not gaining weight. The vet advised that she has pneumonia and is not in a good way. She is now on septrin for two week and nebulisation with disinfectant. They didn't give me a nebuliser tho so I'm a bit stuck on what to do? My poor little lady is so so poorly I don't know what to do to help her. I am so angry with pets at home she is so young and so ill. One major but not life threatening chest infection and now pneumonia I'm devastated xxx

Poor bunny :( vibes for your little lady x

My netherland dwarf had pneumonia a few months back and another of mine is at risk of developing it (chest infection which isn't clearing up ). My nethie was really, really poorly and it was very touch-and-go, but she made a full recovery. The septrin definitely helped, and I started to see an improvement almost immediately! It's horrible when you can hear them struggling to breathe, isn't it? :(

It's the worst sound :( I've phoned pets at home again and told th what has happened and they have agreed to pay for her treatment for this for life as I won't be able to get her insured. I just feel so sad I've only had her a month and she hates me. All she has ever known from me is being held down and syringes put in her mouth and being taken to the vets. She goes for me on a regular basis it's really sad xxx

I've had success with Zithromax for recurrent bouts of pnueumonia. Get your vet to contact Simon Maddock at The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic if he needs to talk it through.

Don't feel disheartened- her even more erratic behaviour than usual for such a situation is just because she's feeling down. She will forgive you for anything that ever happened as long as you love her when she is feeling 100% again :)
X

Thank you all I will def speak to them about speaking to Simon Maddox we are nebulizing like you would steam your face as this is the only information and help I could get from my vets xxx

My Wally had pneumonia. My vets contacted various specialists, including Molly Varga and Simon Maddock.

I don't know whether it can be of any help, but this is my experience with Wally....

Wally was on Marbocyl (recommended by Simon) and duphapen daily. He was also on Corvental twice daily (recommended by Molly Varga) to open up his airways.

At his worst we had to nebulise 3-4 times a day with F10 in saline. We used a carrier as a nebulising chamber as the mask was too stressful for him. Any stress would trigger mouth breathing episodes. I bought a nebuliser from Maplins, it was around £50.

He was also on 0.9ml metacam twice daily (he was 2.4kg)

Wally was diagnosed last November and he lost his fight last week.

He was a very poorly rabbit when the problem first came to light. With Wally the problem was chronic and the bacteria had been wreaking havoc in his lungs with no visible external signs, he coped with it in the early stages and hid it well. It was only when his lungs were so damaged that we started to see external signs, such as mouth breathing, reluctance to move, etc. The bacteria leaves damage that does not heal. From the reading I have done, sadly this is common with bacterial lung infections, by the time you can visibly see there is a problem, the damage is already done and is irreversible.

Wally was initially hospitalised for two weeks, he had oxygen therapy frequently to help with his breathing. His prognosis was extremely poor, but my vets managed to stabilise him with aggressive antibiotic therapy. When he was allowed home, we continued his medication and nebulising. He was happy and comfortable, but didn't have the lung capacity to run, jump etc.

Since November he has had two relapses. He came through the first one with another month long course of antibiotics. He relapsed again two weeks ago and although he initially seemed to be responding the the antibiotics, he then began to deteriorate and we had to make the decision to let him go. After he had relapsed a second time, the damage in his lungs was just too much.

It is good that P@H are paying for treatment. Wally's bill was £1200.

It is a horrible illness. I really do feel for you.

These upper and lower respiratory infections seem to be absolutely rife at the moment. It's a very frightening situation :(

Sending lots and lots of vibes and good wishes to your little girl xx

this is such a sad story and I am so sorry to hear your poor bunny just couldn't fight anymore. It is so so horrible and she sounds like a jack hammer she is sat in one spot all the time. She is still eating and drinking tho. I will speak to my vet about the meds and people you have recommended and ask them to seek advise. I am currently waiting for them to come back to me about getting me a nebuliser as it is an expensive piece of equipment and I believe p@h should covering this as well as she needs this treatment urgently. xxxx

I am so sorry your sweet bunny has pneumonia. I have had a bunny suffer with this. I bought a nebuliser from a local chemist and it cost less than £100. It's been very useful since as well.

I do pray that your sweet one gets better soon
