Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Yearly Jab/neuter

~Chey~

Young Bun
Does anybody know if i have to wait until after neuter before getting the yearly jab for my rabbit?
She's going in on thursday and i don't know whether its best to wait until afterwards...

Will this be her first vaccination? If so, I would go for the vaccination first as myxi and VHD pose more of a risk than waiting a couple of weeks for her to be spayed.

I too would have the vaccination done first then the neuter. If your rabbit has both done at the same time their immune system may not respond properly to the vaccine and therefore it might not be effective, not worth the risk. I would prioritise the vaccine over the neuter.

Yes this is exactly what I thought but the vets seemed to argue with me
How long would you suggest leaving it before getting the neuter (with the vacc being done first)

I think the vaccine takes 3 weeks to become effective, so after that time. Maybe the Vets are worried she might get pregnant if you delay it, they possibly encounter lots of accidental pregnancies.

The vaccine takes 3 weeks to generate immunity, so personally I wouldn't want any other procedure done within 3 weeks after vaccinating. Otherwise I think there is a risk that the rabbit's body will shift focus away from creating an immune response, and focus instead on repairing the wound and recovering from surgery - which could mean that the bun doesn't get the immunity.

Alternatively, you could do the spay first but I would still wait a few weeks afterwards before vaccinating, for the same reason. If there's not a particular reason why the spay needs to be done first, I would recommend vaccinating first, as the weather is warming up and myxo in particular is likely to start spreading again.

Good luck x x
