  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Friend's Rabbit: Weepy and Inflammed Eyes

My friend has a seven year old lop who, for the past month and a half, has had weepy eyes, one is more weepy than the other. She took her to the vet and was given a medication (starting with a T, I can't remember what it's called), which seemed to help. However it has not gone away completely and the one eye is inflammed, though not swollen. She has taken her to the vet and will be trying a tear duct flush and then if that does not work will be taking her to get her teeth checked. Her rabbit has been healthy, except for a couple minor G.I. troubles, her whole life.

If anyone has advice for her, please let me know and I will pass it on.

tooth roots can start to play up as they get older - or sometimes the tear ducts start to close up a bit with age and they are more prone to infections

Tiacil (probably) will have helped but it needs a more throughly diagnostic and pro-active approach by friend and vet!

I would be asking if her vet is rabbit savvy. If she doesn't think so, then ask her to ring around (or you can post up here for her) to find a rabbit savvy vet. :thumb:

Find a decent rabbit vet. I would expect the tear duct flush to have been done after a few weeks of no-improvement on anti-biotics and then eye drops.
