Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fleas?

I'm still learning how to properly look after my boys and was wondering about fleas. I've never seen fleas on my bunnies, but should i be treating them to prevent them getting fleas or should i only treat them if I find them?

Also are there any other treatments that should be done regularly? They are of course vaccinated :)

My vets have always recommended against treating rabbits routinely for fleas. They are so clean that they are unlikely to get fleas, and even if you treat them it has to be done roughly every fortnight to be effective due to their excessive cleaning!

Ah that's good to know, thank you :D

What about worming or anything else?

Someone else will hopefully fill you in with all the latest research etc but no it's not necessary to treat routinely for worms I believe. A 28 day course of panacur is recommended for times of stress/change of environment/introduction of a new bunny etc but I don't think treating 4 times a year is necessary or effective.

I only treat fleas when necessary, same with worming.

I'm not a fan of using chemicals on my buns unnecessarily and my vet doesn't advise it either.

(All my buns had a one off 28 day course of panacur on arrival - I only retreat if necessary).
