  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urine sample via needle to bladder??

No. I've always caught some in a bottle "live" as it were.... Not easy but better than needles with or without a GA. :thumb:

Depends on what sort of urine sample is needed, a more accurate screening for bacteriology will be achieved from taking the sample directly from the bladder using a catheter inserted into the bladder via the urethra.

True, but it's what my vet asked for in preference to her extracting it - I did it once a week for about 6 months so became reasonably good at aiming! :?

For an initial screen though, I'd be more comfortable with this than a fairly risky awake procedure or GA. As you say, depends what you are dealing with and how much you know about it. :thumb:

Never heard of it and what the vet said is worrying!
I would want some sort of sedation for that! I cant imagine it would be very nice without and could cause a lot of stress.

Yeah he said if she moves whilst inserting the needle it can be risky as she may end up with a hole in something she isn't supposed to! Scares the s*** out of us :(

We are so confused though, we keep getting conflicting advice. One vet said we can get a sample ourselves via her peeing into a container of some kind. But we forgot to pick up the container he said he would provide. So when we went back at a later date he said it's no good to do it that way, as it wouldn't be sterile, and she'd HAVE to go under GA to have it taken directly from the bladder. So that's conflicting advice from the same vet. Now a different vet has said she can have the sample taken directly from the bladder but DOESN'T need GA. This is actually what she's now booked in for, but we are thinking of cancelling.

How the hell do you know what's right to do :(

Initially I would personally try to get my own sample for a basic test. If they were taking a sample direct from the bladder then I would defo be asking for some sort of sedation. It would of course depend on what the problem is. One of my buns recently had bladder sludge and after trying abx in case of infection it didn't clear it she had a ga and her bladder flushed to remove it.
