Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Not quite right

Bunsterz

Hey, my conti isn't quite right this evening, she doesn't want pellets, she has eaten broccoli and is bright in herself but something is niggling at me.....think someone may be coming to work with me tomorrow :( she was diagnosed with heart murmur not long after we got her so that is always in the back of my mind, she had her usual run about in the kitchen yesterday and it doesn't seem to take much to tire her, she is our first giant bunny but our other bunnies bomb about for aaaages before they need a lie down, is this just a giant thing?? :(

Giants are prone to heart problems. If she seems quiet and is off her food then she really needs a vet asap rather than waiting until tomorrow. A rabbit that is off their food can quickly go downhill overnight.
If she is still eating but is selectively eating, that may be a sign that she has dental issues. Is she on any medication for her heart problems or are they not that bad yet? Being more tired or lethargic could also be a sign that thing have worsened since last she had a checkup. I hope this is not the case.

How old is she?
How does her tummy sound?
What's coming out the other end?

Hector is a conti and now 20 months. When he stopped growing (around 18 months) he certainly slowed down a bit and getting his diet right was difficult for a week or so. He then picked up the pace again! Basically, he wasn't eating anything different, he was just demanding more of it.

If agree though, if something doesn't feel quite right, it often isn't. I'd keep a close eye on her but no food = vet ASAP.

That said, they do do lethargy better than their tiny relatives!

Hope she's ok.

Thanks for advice and quick reply :) I'm a vet nurse so well aware of emergencies etc, she is still bright and active and has eaten all the broccoli I gave her its just the dry food she isn't too keen on, she is ok in herself and still comes bounding out her crate when i go into the room :) one of our closest friends is a vet that we see often so he is updated on a regular basis :) she isn't showing signs of heart disease currently so no medication is needed so far :)

Hi, she is 14 months old, tummy sounds are good, been checking those regularly, she has passed normal faeces in the same quantity as normal :)

Hector will choose veg over pellets and pellets over hay any day! That said though, he'll only eat when hungry and will happily leave his bowl half full when he's had enough. Possibly just being a bit of a little madam this evening now she's a teenager?!? :)

Hope so and she's ok!

Thank you for the advice, I really hope that's all it is, we have a cardio specialist at work so I will probably book her in for a heart scan just as precaution :) she has just started to moult as well which I wondered may also have something to do with it :)

I will do :) to be honest I will probably do everything, X-rays, scan, bloods etc just for piece of mind :)

Just thought I would update you kera ate all her breakfast today but I still took her in for vet check this evening, teeth good, abdomen good, chest ok however she does have a gallop rhythm on and off so we have decided as a precaution she will have a heart scan, so I spoke to cardiologist about all her symptoms etc and he has booked her in for next Wednesday, neither vets are too concerned at this stage which is good :D

Maybe she was just having a "no pellet" day. Sending vibes that she gets through the heart scan with no problems. x

Update for you - kera had her scan today and she does ave heart disease  we are trying beta blockers at a very low dose to start with as they have the potential to make it worse, we will re-scan her in 3-4 weeks time or before if she deteriorates :(

Oh I am so sorry. :( Did they give you a prognosis?

Jack'sJane has quite a bit of experience with heart disease in bunnies, I think. Hopefully she will see this and have some advice for you.

I think we are just going to see how she goes on the medication, we will re scan in 3 weeks or so to assess progress. I guess the plus side is although she has heart disease she isn't in heart failure yet so I'm hoping these meds help her...I will do anything and everything I can to help her :)

Just thought I would update you, kera is being scanned again on Monday to see how her heart disease is or isn't progressing, she has had 4 weeks on atenolol tablets and she is doing really really well, she has become more active and is much happier, she doesn't get 'puffed' out like she used to :D
