Hi,
We have a bunny who is quite elderly now ( 8 years), but over recent years she has suffered from recurrent bouts of E.cuniculi. It manifests in bunny becoming incontinent and developing a wet bum which obviously elevates the risk of fly strike.
A 28 day course of panacur has in the past resolved this issue, normally for the next 4 to 6 months. Unfortunately recently the time between coming off panacur and the parasite causing the problem again has been getting less. We have done the deep cleans as required but it seems the parasite is now permanently in buns system as 2 weeks after stopping treatment, symptoms return.
We are now getting to the point where we are considering putting bunny on panacur permanently. I know there has been some evidence of excessive panacur dosing causing side affects with the bone marrow. However We were wondering if anyone else has got to the stage where they have a rabbit permanently on panacur? and if there were any problems. The decision between having a bunny who is incontinent and associated quality of life that gives versus the use of panacur permanently and having a happy bun seems to us quite straight forward !
Any advice gratefully received.
