  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any alternatives to syringing meds at home?

The more well Rascal feels, the harder it is to syringe his meds ...... he is getting so stressed that I keep thinking he may have a heart attack on me!

I did get away with putting some in mushed up narna y'day but he got wise to that and wouldn't take it today!!

Any imaginative ways you've come up with??

thanks, Jo

It's best really giving bunnies their meds by syringe as it's quicker to work but if he has any favourite treats put his meds on them but make sure he is eating the treats with it on.

You could try putting the meds on a tiny piece of bread; sometimes a couple of leaves of basil work, but sometimes it slips off!

With Metacam all my lot take straight from the syringe, with Panacur I have to be more sneaky so it gets spread on a Fenugreek and my bunnies wouldn't dare leave a Fenugreek

Helennnnnnnnnn mushes up a few cms of banana with the metacam and gives it to her bunny that way. I used her idea for my bunny today except I used blended up apple and strawberry (with chunky bits) and just squirted it on top. My bun ate it all and licked the plate, I'm pretty sure Helennnnnnnnnnnnns does too! Fruit is so sweet that it masks the flavour so they wolf it down usually.

I think it's easier giving Metacam as it tastes fruity so a bit more inviting than some of the other meds.
