  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please read! Has anyone had this with a bunny??

Hello, :) would love to hear from anyone who could possibly offer any advice on the following; at the end of November I collected 2 continental giant sisters. On the way home I heard one sneeze but took no notice of her. I left them to settle that night but the following day noticed they both had wet fur either side of their noses surrounding their nostrils. I monitored them and realised they were both sneezing/snuffling once in a while. Their symptoms were so minor, and they were eating/drinking/pooping normally. After a week syptoms were exactly the same. Although the bunnies didnt appear to be suffering they were not right so I decided to take them to the vets. The vet checked them over and said it didn't appear to be anything major, but suggested they had a 10 day course of antibiotics each to clear up any respiratory infection. The course finished just over a week and a half ago. The rabbits are no different...still acting perfectly normal, eating, drinking fine. But still have the nose discharge and sneeze/wheeze infrequently. Last week I moved them inside, I have replaced bedding with paper, they have litter instead of shavings in their toilet, and have bought dust extracted hay with the intension of ruling out allergies. A week on in dust free conditions - no change!

Can anyone shed any light at all? Has anyone experienced this? Or can anyone make a suggestion?

Thanks for your time? x

They need to go back to the Vet

Sometimes a much longer course of antibiotics is needed, or a different antibiotic.

Is the nasal discharge clear or whitish ?

It sounds like they just haven't responded to what was prescribed, but I've had this happen a few times. My vet then did a culture to find out which anti-biotics would clear it up.

Did the vet check their tear ducts? One of mine also had a wet nose and sneezing and after changing vet it turned out that a blocked tear duct was the cause. Hope they get better soon

Definitely get them back to the vets, or a different vet if you're not happy with your own. Respiratory infections in bunnies need to be treated asap or they could get much worse. A rabbit-savvy vet should be able to help though :)
