  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can I insist on a medicine to be prescribed?

The reason I'm asking this as reading up on metoclopramide, I think would sort Doughnut out. Just wonder if the specialist doesn't suggest it they I can say I want to try her on it!

It seems to help heartburn, slow gut, nausea and vomiting, which I think she is trying to do but obviously can't.

Sorry to start a different thread just want to know if the specialist doesn't agree I can say I want to try it and see if it helps. Last time she was given ranitidine and it didn't seem to help, made her have more diarrhea.

I would politely suggest it rather than go in all guns blazing so-to-speak. It is not necessarily going to be an appropriate treatment. At the moment the problem has not been identified.

Oh I will be polite. Just trying to think back weeks ago but I'm sure when she had a shot of that the noise did go away!

I will mention it if she suggests ranitidine again as I don't think that was the solution as there was no change just more diarrhea. I guess they do different things.

I have often told vets what I want to treat with in the past and why, particularly with my pet rats. My vet is great with this but I have had issues with others when he's not been around. Fortunately if there is a disagreement between me and another vet he backs me up and we get want we want but it can be difficult.
It can help to go armed with info i.e. any case studies you can find on the web or threads from forums where it's worked. If I want to try something a bit "outisde the box" I usually send my vet the info first and then we discuss it and agree a way forward.
It's also important to remember that they have their training and may also have their own experiences to draw on and not to come across as though you think you know best. Airing it as a suggestion with info on why you want to try something is usually the best way. Good luck!

They do

I will. She is very good so hopefully will have some answers. If she has other suggestions I'm happy to try them too.
