  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice?

They may not pass on any actual disease, although there are some which could be transmitted (eg Salmonellosis, Tularemia, Pasteurella) a bite wound is very likely to become infected. This could lead to the formation of an abscess.

If you think that your Rabbit has been bitten then you need to consult a Vet ASAP.

I had a rat in my garden recently who had bitten Poppy on her ear 3 times.
Vet put her on Baytril as a precaution as she said they can become infected. We also gave the wounds a good wash with hibi scrub.

OMG that is awful and disgusting as well, poor Poppy. Is the rat gone now? If you have an ongoing problem with rats I don't think it is fair to leave your poor bunny exposed to them. Could you not bring her in at night or move her somewhere the rats can't get to her? Worse case scenario that I have come across is the poor bunny had not especially a terribly big bite, but it caught a main artery and happened during the night. When my sister went out to feed her in the morning she had literally bled to death from the bite.
