  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Matted hair around bum

lupine lacuna

Warren Scout
What to do about this? I notice the bun spends an unusual amount of time trying to rip it out. I assume it is irritating/causing discomfort? She is a mini lop, so hair is very hair and quite long. What should I do?

Thanks

I usually clip mine but you do have to be very careful indeed. Will your bunny stay still for you? If so you can try to slip a comb directly underneth the matt (just a small way to start with) if you can and then snip with siscors along the top of the comb, this way is safer as you're not cutting near the skin and then you can use the feel of the comb to help you guide the scissors along. Hope this makes sence. To be totally honest, if the matts are very bad best to pop to the vets and they will happily do this for you

I take Doughnut to the vets if i can see she is matted. Normally she's OK but when she had been ill they did her nail clip and also clipped her bum area so she was a lot cleaner. I think once it gets matted the rabbit can't clean it properly however much they try.

You only need to see the nurse.
