  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I been at work all day and gran comes in at lunch to check on my buns but she didn't secure the puppy gate and Evan has chewed a cable I took him to vet straight away and apart from a few singed whiskers he appears fine they gave him some metacam and said keep an eye on him does this sound ok? Should I be doing something more I feel awful the cable was in my room where he isnt allowed normally.

There isn't much else you can do to be honest, he's been checked over and given pain relief, nothing else to be done, just keep an eye on him. The shock would have either stopped his heart at the time it happened, or not, if not then he will probably be fine x

p.s. chances are the circuit tripped quickly anyway as it is supposed to do. Do keep an eye out for reduced fecal output over the next few days as a delayed stress reaction to the shock.

Yeah the circuits tripped just really worried as vet said it can cause fluid on the lungs and he has poor chest anyway I'm new to having house buns and I just feel so guilty

Don't feel guilty, it can happen to anyone. One of my buns chewed through a tower fan when it was turned on. Luckily he didn't hurt himself, but I hadn't expected it as he was pretty much free range and hadn't shown a single interest in wires for years.

It's important to learn from mistakes like this, I don't think it can 'happen to anyone'.
