Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hello!

Somehow, one of our bunnies, Navi, has escaped during the day. Not very far, just into the apartment from their enclosure. Being a very determined rabbit, she has jumped onto the table, seemingly knocked off a pot of M&S Chocolate cornflake cakes... and ate 'em.

No idea what time of day this happened, anytime between 07:30 and 18:30. She seems perfectly fine (but then she may well have eaten them just a moment ago!)

What to do? Keep an eye on her? Get her to emergency vet? Or is she likely to be OK? I have expected, as it's an unusual food regardless, to see some cecals over the course of the evening. I haven't found any. But again, I have no idea when she ate this stuff.

Bunnies...

She's got plenty of hay and water. Is it worth feeding her some SS now? Or wait? She'd normally have dinner at around 20:00.

So angry with myself.

I contacted our vet and was directed to an emergency vet. He said I should monitor her, check all is well, continue life as normal (so feed her) and be cautious but not overly worried at this stage. Thoughts guys?

Just spotted that her other water bowl (she escaped once before and ever since, I've always left a second bowl of water because once she escapes, she can't get back in!) and noticed that is totally empty, suggesting she's been drinking from it for a long time today. Doesn't necessarily mean she's eaten the chocolate a long time ago, but means she's managed to free roam for a while.

She still seems perfectly fine. Gave her a small handful of Science Selective an hour or so ago and she wolfed it down.

Assuming she ate the chocolate at 18:30, it's now 3 hours later and she is her normal self. How long would it take (I know it's difficult) to pass through and cause her issues? It's unlikely she ate ALL the chocolate at 18:30 so it's probably been longer, but better safe than sorry.

I'm not sure, I watched Poppy for a couple of days before deciding she was fine:lol: not sure how long you should leave it really :? But I think she'll be okay :)

Hehe - yes, I'll probably do the same no doubt. What makes it worse is I can't remember how many pieces were left. I'd say a quarter of one of those tubs they sell. She seems bouncy enough. Hopping around... probably waiting for more Science Selective. Thanks very much :)

I think I would carry on with their routine as normal but keep a closer eye on eating, drinking and pooing for a day or so.

Thank you. I expect there'll be a few excess soft poos tonight. She'll be very closely monitored. :)

[weird]Tempted to even set up a webcam for Operation BunWatch for when I'm at work tomorrow... but then again, maybe not... [/weird]
