  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New nobi-vac vaccine

Well the original study which resulted in the advice to give panacur for 9 days was based on giving it to 4 rabbits!

It is worth remembering though that this is an academic paper giving an overview and not the totality of all clinical trials (the paper itself refers to other clinical trials which aren't published) for which authorisation would be granted. Academic papers for publication have to meet the requirements of the publisher including word limits so I doubt very much that this is the totality of trials and information submitted to the EU and on which the EU marketing authorisation for a POM-V would be granted...but I may be wrong!

Looks like field studies were done on Farmed Rabbits too

Additionally, field safety studies conducted with farmed rabbits
revealed no adverse clinical signs (data not shown). With intensively
farmed rabbits, there is always an underlying respiratory disease; nevertheless, vaccination with Nobivac Myxo-RHD did not exacerbate
any existing respiratory conditions, and therefore the vaccine is also
considered safe for use in young, commercially farmed animals.
In further (unpublished Spibey and others) studies, doses of up to
10/7ffu were administered to laboratory SPF and dwarf rabbits with
no adverse reaction. It was notable that the vaccine virus did not disseminate to the typical sites of replication of the wild-type myxoma
virus such as the skin around the eyes, ears and genitalia. Occasionally,
at about a week after vaccination, small local reactions (1 to 2 cm
in diameter) were observed at the site of injection; however, these
resolved completely within a few days.

That study, and the others, are summarised in the EMA document I posted previously (the EMA website is curretly down for maintenance so i can't re-post).

To answer the comment on the number of rabbits used, this is always small now in accordance with the 3 R's for reducing animal testing. This is always a balancing act, enough animals to get meaningful results versus a reduction in animal testing.
