Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Underweight Baby Bunny?

DavidCummings

Young Bun
Hi all,
Poppy was approx 22 weeks old we where looking at getting her neutered but the vets said shes under weight shes been checked for worms and nothing found vet said she probably had to fight for her food in the pet store, we kept her on the baby food as the vet told us to, and shes put on a lot in two weeks. (we have now had her ten weeks)

I was wondering how many bones you should feel in a rabbits back, we used to be able to stroke her and really feel her spine we cant feel it when stroking her softly when we stroke her a bit harder we can still feel it a little she seems to like this though. We can still feel her front shoulder blades and rear shoulder blades quite well. We haven't been able to put her on the scales as she legs it the second you put her down to play chase (i chase her then after i sit down for a bit and move away she runs after me as if she knows shes gunna miss something anyways..) not having owned a rabbit since i was four (some 29 years ago) I cant remember what is good and what isnt

dave
thanks in advance

I believe (based on my own experience of my rabbit) you should just about be able to feel the spine and ribs but they should feel rounded, not sharp. shoulder blades and hips, I can feel them on my rabbit but again they don't feel sharp.

thats exactly how she is, just checked and had her on her back on my knee and she was like giggling as i checked so i played with her belly and i think that was a tad too ticklish for her and she bolted!

in which case she's probably a good weight for her :)

aww bless her! if she lets you touch her tummy she must trust you a lot :)

Dug out this for you, its from the RWAF , its about overweight rabbits really but its important stuff to read and has a bodyscoring bit you should find helpful: http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/pdfs/ROSpring10-Bodyconditionscore.pdf

Careful you dont trance her or put her completely on her back when you tickle her tummy.

She sounds very cute, hopefully she'll be up to a good weight in no time. Does she eat her hay well? as not eating enough hay I've found can make buns lose weight. When you get her neutered you could also have her teeth checked under anesthetic, as dental problems can cause weight loss.
