Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! Fleas?

Young Bun
hi, none of my rabbits have ever had fleas or mites before. I clean the hutch out 3 times a week, groom my rabbit daily, and he is never near other animals. Earlier i noticed him scratching, so checked his fur, and found a few small black moving dots. Are these fleas or mites? I have put johnsons fly strike protector on him- it says it also kills external parisites. So are these fleas? And how long should the treatment take to work? thanks :)

Mites are tiny, only just visible to the visible to the naked eye, whereas fleas are bigger- about 1-2mm long and move quickly through the fur. If you're still not sure see if you can catch one with some sticky tape for your vet to identify
I don't know what Johnson's fly strike protector contains but for mites you can use something containing ivermectin (Beaphar spot-on or Xeno) whereas fleas can be killed with Advantage which you can get from a vet. Don't use other flea treatment made for cats or dogs as they can be very dangerous to rabbits.
Both fleas and mites can spread disease such as myxi so check their vaccines are up to date xx

Thankyou for your quick reply! I took my bunny to the rabbit breeder i got him from, and got a spot on treatment for him. It was a summer mite. They are very small, just like moving dots! Thank you for your help! :)
