Dandruff on ears and neck- not mites?

New Kit
Hi,

Our mini lop (house rabbit) has dandruff on her ear (not both), back of the neck and infrequently on her head. She has had a course of stronghold after our vet thought it might be mites about 4 months ago, no improvement was seen. A sample from her was was checked under a microscope and no mites found.

Our vet has proposed two options, another dose of stonghold or for her to see a dermatologist, with possible skin scrapes.

She has always had slightly flakey skin from when we first got her as a baby.

She's had a rough start of the year with GI issues (all better now), so we don't want to subject her to any further pain unless absolutely necessary. When treated for the GI issues she lost some hair on the same ear which has been slow to grow back.

Other than the dandruff her skin looks ok, no soreness or redness, she is not scratching excessively and seems in good health otherwise.

Any suggestions for at home treatments for dry/flakey skin or do we need to take her to see the dermatologist?

Mites can be detected in a microscope.
If its not mites, it maybe the heating system if shes indoors??? Just an idea...

Thanks yvette. Do you mean it's too warm for her? We just have standard central heating although my wife does like the house warm 20-22c measured on a thermometer. The heating is off at night and temp drops to around 15c.

My Holland lop has this condition too. All my bunnies are in house and not only is the temperature constantly in the seventies fahrenheit but our humidity is usually low. Maybe it's not just warm but perhaps too dry in your home?

I'd be interested in hearing how this is resolved. I've tried just about everything I can for my bunnies with no effect. :(

We're just undecided whether to leave it as it doesn't seem to bother her or spend the money on a dermatologist (£120). I guess if it poses no health risk then I'd be inclinced to leave it.
