Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

In the next day or 2 I will be taking care of the 'neglected bunny' from the rabbits in need thread - you can see pics of her on facebook - she is badly neglected, matted and dirty and in a real mess. I am willing to give her everything she needs but would welcome expert advice on where to start please. Thanking you in anticipation of your help

Snowy or littleboots may be the best people to pm. Littleboots has Dylan who was terribly matted pet shop bun who was rescued.

First thing I would do would be a trip to the vets to get her checked out. They may also be able to help trim the fur if necessary (not seen the pics) and clean her up.

Well done for helping her.

ETA - just seen FB, poor little bun.

looking at the pics i would suggest a trip to a good vets to have her trimmed up is a priority before the bottom gets even worse. Though it may be possible to soak the poo off I suspect that there may be skin infection underneath or even torn skin and really a vet trip would be best - they can take off any other matted fur as well with their specialist clippers (and double check teeth, sex, etc).

Then its just a matter of slowly gaining her confidence and introducing her to a good hay and pellet based diet.

Oh - and after 2 weeks (allowing settling in time) then start vaccinations - myxi first as its so mild this year then 2 weeks after that VHD.

Well done you

Thank you - have done mucky/matted bums before so I know a bit about that, but as you say a vet trip is priority for initial assessment etc. The love/attention/good food/warmth etc side is no problem! It'll be great to see the big change in her as she deserves to be a happy, healthy little girl

Awww how exciting, I bet you can't wait to meet her :D

Looking forward to lots of photo's!

This thread may as well be CLOSED too seeing as Happybunny 22000 has decided not to allow this bunny a loving new home in my care so i will not be needing anyones help or advice anymore - thanks anyway everyone

As I said on the other thread suzi- I would adopt a bunny from a rescue.

Sorry this happened to you
