Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore Hock Help

Both Heather and Barty have developed sore hocks (though Bart on one foot only). I have no idea how they have got them :? The floor of their wendyhouse is covered in lino and then fleece blankets and vet bed on top. The only abrasive fabric is a old carpet type mat which they only sit on to drink and eat their evening meal(about~15mins a day). They NEVER sit on it during the day as its next to a slight draft under the door.

Outside the run is slabbed, which I could imagine could cause sore hocks but they've been on the slabs for well over a year with no sign of the sore hocks before now.

Pic of inside of the wendyhouse (excuse the mess):

I really don't know what could be causing them :? Even the vet was stumped when we explained their housing arrangment.

Also the vet advised to put sudocream on the hocks, but we're finding that a) it so hard to get the cream on the sore hock and not just stuck in all the fur around them and b) the cream seems to rub off almost as soon as they are put back on the ground!

Will the sudocream still being doing some good despite being almost immediatly rubbbed off or is there something I can do to stop it rubbing off so fast :?

Thank youu! x

Yes it will do some good. A very knowledgeable member on here suggested using savlon healing gel on alberts feet and that seemed to help as it hardened the skin.

Try to keep them off concrete as this will make them worse. Did the vet say anything about their weight? Also are their nails long?

Thank Webble :)

Nails and weight are both fine. I'll try the Savlon aswell then. My vet said if the sudocream wasn't working then to come back and he'd give us some type of 'steroid cream' I think.

I'm looking into getting some of those rubber mats to cover at least some of the run. It just seems odd that if its the slabs causing the sore hocks then why has it never been a problem before :?
