Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore Hocks

Just got Bell for cuddles and she has sore hocks :( 1 on each back foot,.... can i treat these myself or will she need a vet?

She lives in an outdoor double 5x2x4 hutch with a large attached run with her best bud rosie, up until last friday i was using newspaper and sawdust/ straw as a base. But friday i changed it to mats (carpeted up the top) and lyno at the bottom with the bedroom still full of straw and trays with hay downstairs..... i'm guessing the changing in the flooring has caused this?

should i change it back...? its so much cleaner this way buit whatevers best i shall do.

ill go check the other buns to see if its happend to them!

try using sudacrem on them twice a day if they are not to bad, and make sure they have lots of soft things to rest their feet on and if they don't get better then i would take them to the vets.

Sudocrem is great.
Check their nails, if they're too long it causes more pressure on the back of the hock.
I found hay or foam matting to be the best flooring

I wouldn't put anything on the hocks unless there is broken skin, in which case you should be seeing a vet anyway. Putting cream on a sore hock dampens the fur around the sore part and reduces the natural cushioning effect of the fur.

I would bed the bun on something soft - a thick layer of hay is recommended for outdoor buns, and vetbed or fleece for indoor ones - and leave it to heal. I have a rex who has had hock problems and we only ever put cream on her feet when the skin is broken.

How is the general condition of the bun - ie how is their weight, what do they live on, how long are their nails, as these can all cause sore hocks. Once they heal, you want to stop them coming back, so need to know what caused them in the first place.

Agreed

Thank you all, I have just changed there bedding back to hay.... there weight, condition and nails are all fine, i do them regularly.

I wont use anything on them for now then as they are not broken.

I'm guessing it must be the flooring i put in on friday as thats the only change made to thier housing...
