Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rear guard !

Hello.

We got out new French lop rabbit on saturday he is called
Dave he is 13 weeks old and totally gorgeous, yesterday I took him to be vaccinated and the vet applied a solution called rear guard around his bottom this fur has now got matted n wood shaving in it am I allowed to wash/ brush it out?? Also his breeder was feeding him chudleys rabbit royale is this the beSt food for him? Thank you for any help you can give me. Sarah.

I have only used RearGuard once and would not choose to use it again due to Jimby going in to statis afterwards.
Make sure little Dave keeps eating and producing the normal amount of poops.
I am not sure if you can now wash his bum or if you should leave it, I would give the vets a call and ask them.

Just a few pointers, I would avoid using wood shavings and opt for hay instead as wood shavings can cause nasty respritory problems in bunnies.
The Rabbit Royal is that a mix or a pellet? I would very much avoid using a mix as the fibre content will not be as high and they also promote selective feeding, a lot of us on here use Allen and Page or Science Selective.
But if you do decide to change his food, do it SLOWLY! Slowly decrease the origional food, replacing with the new food and do it over a period of about 2 weeks.
Rabbits ahve extremely sensitive tummies so it is vital you do not make any sudden changes.

Have never used rear guard. At 13weeks your bun will have a lovely clean bum,so no need.My frenchies & other buns have all been on excel so cant comment on chudley but they have never had a problem with it.Casper is still on adlib pellets & the only time he has had an access of caecotrophs is when hubby gave him veg straight from fridge.
