  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What should I do with a cut on bunnies back

Hi, i think my bunny has a cut on his back. When stroking him over the weekend i felt a lump in the middle of his back to the side of his spine which made me panic, on closer inspection it looks like he has caught his skin and torn it there is a circle of skin which is raised and hard on top, like it is healing but when i parted the hair to see if ok the flap of skin lifted slightly and it looked like it would bleed easily, the skin looks healthy with no sigh of infection. Iv'e discovered a sharp bit of mesh on the run which could have been the culprit. Do you think i need to take him to the vets or is it something i can deal with at home and if so what should i do to it, leave it alone to heal or bathe it???
Many thanks for any advice its much appreciated, (they are a constant worry arent they)

Has he had a vaccination recently? Does he have a bonded friend?

I would suggest a vet check, just to be on the safe side. I had a bunny with a wound that looked fine, but when the vet examined it and removed the scab it was a horrendous wound and he needed a lot of wound bathing, antibios and pain relief.
