Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I always seem to write about Minnie but she is the one with health problems.

She's having her Convenia jabs every four weeks now but the lump on her face is slowly getting bigger. This is an abscess caused by tooth roots. She has been on Convenia for over a year now. She also has 4 drops of metacam a day and 1ml of fibreplex. She is having pro fibre pellets but her poos are squishy and very smelly. She has also stopped using her litter tray.

I just wondered if anyone had anything else we could try?

She is definetely ready to be helped to the bridge yet, but I know it won't be long. (Although I ythought that when we first got her in Nov 09)

I'm not familiar with Convenia, but a good protocol for jaw abscesses seems to be penicillin (I know a few members have had good results from using Streptacare, and apparently it's recommended by FHB the bunny vet).

If the abscess is growing, then it probably needs to be either removed surgically or lanced to remove the pus.

I'm not sure how much 4 drops of metacam is, but it doesn't sound very much. My vet usually recommends about 0.7 or 0.8mls for an average 2kg rabbit.

Whilst surgery may not be an option could the Vet open the abscess to allow daily flushing and packing with Manuka Honey ?

As Bun has been on Convenia for over a year and the abscess is still actually active I wonder if the Convenia is doing anything but cause cecal dysbiosis now :?

Personally I would want to discuss with the Vet stopping systemic abx, opening up the abscess, doing daily flushes with chlorhexidine and packing with Manuka Honey. I'd also want to discuss increasing the dose of Metacam.

I would not want to give ANY more systemic abx for at least 10 days to allow the dysbiosis to settle. But if the Vet thinks this is not appropriate then I'd really only want Bun to be on Baytril administered by subcutaneous injection.

Do you know if there is also osteomyelitis in the jaw ?

Thanks for the replies.

I don't personally think Minnie could cope with a GA.

Her teeth and roots are all twisted and very odd looking and I think the bone is also infected.

She is due another jab next saturday 30th. I don't know whether to put this off to see if her output improves?

Could we maybe stop the Convenia and try Penicillian?

Our vet is very good and will listen to any suggestions.
