Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Excess cecotropes

loppy ears

Warren Veteran
I have gradually reduced the buns pellets however tonight my boy is had excess cecotropes - he has had a few in the past but tonight there was a lot it happened a few hours after their spring green and Basil meal, I normally give them pellets at ten but tonight I have just topped up their hay, am I right to not give pellets tonight. I am sat worried that they may be hungry and think I have forgotten their supper.:(

aaah bless you - I know what you mean - their little faces saying - hey we want more pellets!:D
The extra cecals were prob. from the spring greens & basil meals...if they have excell of veges or pellets - often they will get extra ceacs....topping up their hay is the best thing for this....no more pellets till the enxt usual feed..if the ceacs continue then hay only for at least 48 hrs.....as much as they adore the pellets ..its like sweets...mone go mad for them....but Ive also got them excited now at fresh handfuls of hay and dried herbs / plants for variation....Im sure they will be fine - as long as they have plenty of fresh hay - they def. wont go hungry - esp. if they have no hay eating issues. Youve done the right thing thats best for their tummies!
