  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear abscesses

Anyone had a bun with one who could give me some info on treatments & which ones were most effective etc.?

Thanks :)

With abscesses, removal is usually the best option if feasible...then long term treatment with antibiotics.

As Jane says, a C&S test will help identify the bacteria involved. You have to be careful with C&S results though because they often say that pasteurella is sensitive to baytril, which is is (strictly speaking) but the nature of rabbit pus makes it pretty ineffectual.

One of mine had ear abscesses removed a couple of years ago, then treament with depocillin for about 8 months afterwards. He's been abscess free ever since :)

William has been doing quite a bit of research on ear abcesses as bunnylover177's has two buns with them. Which bun are you concerned about?

It's Piglet. She's going back on thursday as she's lost weight & if she's lost more/not put any on by then he'll look at her teeth again and he wants to look at her ear at the same time.

Thanks, I'll know more next week as it wasn't me who took her last week :)
