  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wondering if anyone has the same problem...

I have a male Lionhead rabbit who is a year old.
His eyes leak with tears and occasionally white gunky stuff--Almost like sleep. He has been to the vets and they flushed his tear ducts out and said everything would be fine after that but it would be an on going thing and he would need to have it done 3 times a year. He only had it done about 3 weeks, but they've continued to leak and didn't stop even when they'd flushed them. His eyes are quite red where they leak and he has lost fur around his eyes, and occasionally all the salt from the tears builds up and clumps together and eventually falls out in a lump with a lot of hair.

I was just wondering if anyone had the same problem with their rabbit and if they could tell me what it is or what I can do?

Silly question, cos i'm assuming they'll have done this... have they checked his teeth and also his teeth roots? Elongated teeth roots can cause this problem with them squishing the tear ducts. Teeth probs are very common in Lionheads due to the way they were crossed to 'produce' them. All my four are now dental buns because of misallignment

It may be elongated tooth roots that are causing the problem. Elongated tooth roots can block the nasolacrimal duct causing chronic dacryocystitis (runny eyes).

I would suggest asking your Vet if he/she thinks skull radiographs are necessary as this is the only way to diagnose tooth root elongation.

Sometimes both systemic and topical antibiotics are required to get on top of the infection. It is important to do so as in some cases abscesses can form within the duct and these can be very problematic to treat.
