Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

How on earth do you get rabbits to take antibs?

My rabbits were neutered yesterday and have to take antibiotics for 6 days via a syringe. I have tried everything this mroning to get them to take them with no luck - any thoughts please?

TIA x

I'm having to give one of my rabbits some baytril at the moment and I'm mixing it in with his water. Paste type things I'd try sticking on food like donnamt suggested.

it's difficult isn't it?! Might sound a daft question, but are you putting the syringe in the side of their mouth, not the front? I was doing that until the vet pointed out they've got big front teeth so the syring needs to go behind them, dur  maybe that was just me though lol :lol:

Otherwise, if its Baytril it apparently tastes very sour so try drawing it up in the syring then draw up some pineapple juice or ribena to sweeten it a bit.

And do the bunny burrito wrapping them up in a massive towel to stop them wriggling free, unless yours are like mine and are a pair of little houdini's

I used to get as much as i could in his mouth then squirt the rest on his paws as they instantly lick it off, good luck ;)

I put the Baytril and metacam on top of her pellets. The metronidazole, which is in tablet form, I grind up and put it on small pieces of apple.

Yes it's baytril.

Am guessing I can't put it in water as they won't drink enough but I'll try some of the other suggestions!

I feel awful saying this, but when I had to give painkillers to my bun, the only way I could do it was to lie her on her back on my lap and syringe it bit by bit into the side of her mouth. She obviously hated this, but at least I knew she was getting all of her dosage.

Should point out though that my bun didn't have any stitches, so I don't know whether you're allowed to pick them up when they have stitches, and maybe that depends on whether they struggle, which my little bun didn't anyway. I just felt bad for lying her on her back mainly.

Baytril tastes very bitter I understand so it needs disguising if you want to give it on food. You could try the mashed banana ideas (just a tiny bit) or grated carrot, a shreddie or soaked in to a fenugreek crunchi - but to be honest I have never got it down a bun this way!

If they don't have an upset tum you could add a tiny bit of ribena to the dose of Baytril to inprove the flavour.

I find they are easier to handle in a place they are not so familiar with.

I always put a folded towel on the kitchen table, get the syringe ready, catch bun quietly, sit it on the table in front of me, bottom to my tum, left hand over shoulders to keep bun still, move hand up over head lift right top lip with my left thumb, leaning over bun to preven upward movement, instert syringe to side of mouth and slowly administer meds giving bun time to drink it.

Good luck!
