Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

teeth dropping out

Wise Old Thumper
does anyone have experience of their buns teeth dropping out?

I have spoken to my vet and she said, so long as they are wearing the top ones down enough (its the bottom ones that drop out) then I shouldn't worry too much about it.

She doesn't want to take them out.

Surely them dropping out must cause pain, especially as they get longer, just before they drop out the do get quite long, so much so I was going to make an appointment this morning, however, they are no longer there:roll:.

I would definately not just want to leave things.
It's certainly not normal and probably means that there are issues with the molars aswell as the possibility of a systemic problem re calcium, maybe including osteoporosis. Were this to be the case then the Rabbit is at high risk of tooth root abscesses.

If they are brittle enough they are breaking like that then she might be reluctant to remove them because getting all the root out so they don't regrow would be more difficult if the teeth just shatter.

I agree with Jane, the main concern is why are they breaking in the first place. Do they look normal or are they ridged/oddly coloured?

Ditto what the others have said...probably dental disease.

Re. your original questions...

The top teeth may need burring if there is no bottom ones to rub against, but removal of molars often isn't an option.

Yes, the teeth falling out could well cause pain. A pain killer like metacam is a good idea until the holes have closed up or the teeth started to grow back.

the bottom teeth do grow back, and the top teeth have not needed burring before, they seem to 'work' if that makes sense.

This has been happening since August last year, when he came to live with me. As I said I have brought it up with the two vets he has been to see, and neither said it was something to worry about or to treat.

His back teeth are fine, and I make a point of getting them checked each time I am there.

Not sure why you are asking us then as you appear happy with the opinion of the two Vets you have seen :?

IMO the Rabbit is at risk of infection/abscessation. The molars are very unlikely to be 'OK' and less than 50% of molar 'issues' can be seen on during a conscious examination.

Rabbit's teeth dont 'fall out' unless there is a problem

Jane, I have not said it was ok, I said they work. If it was ok and I wasn't worried about it I wouldn't have brought it up with the second vet, or started numerous threads asking for peoples opinions over the past year.

I can only go by what vets have said and query this with other vets and those with more experience than myself, on here. That is why I like this forum.

That's why I replied passing on what I have learned from my experience with Rabbits who have Dental Disease.
