  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Athletes foot and rabbits

I think I have athlete's foot (redness lumps and itching). Am I right in thinking it's caused by the same fungus as ringworm? If so, should I be taking any precautions around the rabbits? I already wear shoes or slippers around them, but could I carry it on my hands, etc?

I don't think the same species of fungus affects rabbits? I know we can develop ringworm from an infected rabbit, but not sure about the other way round.
Think it would be impossible to prevent spores from being blown about the place.
Maybe you've got chilblains, rather than athletes foot?

Athletes foot causes cracking and soreness and redness usually between the 4th and 5th (little) toes. if your toes are red and itchy its more likely to be chilblains. athletes foot is caused by sweaty skin getting colonised by fungi that live on the skin. as long as you practise good hand washing /hygeine there is no risk to bunnies or people. hope this helps.

It's definitely not chill blains (I used to get them all the time when I went horse riding a lot).

I'm not totally sure it's athletes foot...could be something bacterial I guess. It looks like small pink lumps down the length of my toes (not just in between them) and underneath my toes too. Itches like crazy sometimes.
