  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nervous about VHD

Candiflare

Mama Doe
Ruby just had her myxi jab so can't have VHD for another couple of weeks. I've put her in the shed that Ralphy is in for the first time tonight (not together, but so they can see each other) and I'm just nervous that some of the hay/straw/insects would be carrying the VHD virus. Ralphy has, of course, been vaccinated against it, but I'm just a bit nervous about it. Also, I've cleaned her new *double decker* hutch but there was an odd stain on it which looked like a rabbit had wee'd in the corner (despite it being new) :censored: so I'm now worried another rabbit's been in it.

How much should I be worried about this?

Unfortunately VHD is airborne so there is no way of protecting your bunnies against it. But thankfully VHD outbreaks are a lot less common than myxi. You are doing everthing right by getting them vaccinated at the right times so try not to worry too much :)

I was just going to say the same as Liz. This article might give you some more info:

It is very important to get your bun vaccinated, but outbreaks are less common than Myxi and tend to happen in clusters I believe. Plus the chances of your bun contracting VHD in the 2 week wait period is extremely unlikely so try not to worry. The risks only increase the longer bun stays unvaccinated - which won't happen with your bun, or unless you are very unlucky. I'm sure your bun will be fine. :)
