Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

side effects of anti biotics

i've noticed Pierre has developed thick dandruff on his upper back (it continues up to the top of his ears and the back of his head but his flanks seem to be free of it) the skin isn't inflamed, he hasn't been scratching and was treated for mites a week ago as a precaution.
i was wondering if this was a common side effect of a prolonged course of antibiotics?
he was on anti biotics for over 2 months to treat an abcess in his ear and now (only a few weeks later) he looks like hes going to be on them more or less for the rest of his life due to his over grown molar roots.
hes curantly on baytrl and tetracycline.

I suspect its more likely to be due to the fact that he is less able to groom himself because of his Dental problems

I would groom him daily and also gently massage the effected areas to try to encourage a healthy blood circulation

xx

that might explain why it was worst around his head ( hes still seperate from the girls i guess they helped groom the bits he couldn't reach:( )

thanks jane. i was begining to panic again.

Also, sometimes an inability to groom properly allows existing mite popluations to get out of control, grooming keeps them under control. This is why mite popluations commonly flare up when bun is both under the weather immune wise (less resistance) and also because sick buns groom less. Did he have just one dose of Ivermectin, or a proper 3 dose course over 6 weeks?
