  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Noticed B had a red lumpy ear so when took her for her VHD I got the vet to have a look.We decided it wasn't infected as it didn't smell but the vet said there was a build up of wax deep inside. She said to just keep an eye on it.I bathed it with warm olive oil & today noticed crusty stuff coming out of her ear.I presume this is softened wax.Am I doing the right thing? Its not painful.

Lops are prone to wax build up so you'll need to keep them clean to avoid an ear infection.
If you suspect ear mites or an ear infection you could ask your vet to look at a sample of the gunk under a microscope for mites and if problems persist they could maybe send a swab off to a laboratoty to find out what bacteria/yeasts are present xx

This is the only bun that has ever had mites. Her ear is so sore looking & is spreading to her face.Gave her her 1st dose of Spot on yest & dropped/wiped her ears with olive oil again today.Wiping Dills ears too.Am I doing the wrong thing with the oil?How long until the Spot on starts to improve things?

Sorry to hear your bun is poorly, if I were you I'd call the vet and see what they say as it's always best to be on the safe side and it will stop you worring too :) Sending all the vibes I can for your little bun, I do hope he gets better soon.

Thankyou.Am going to keep an eye on her over weekend to see if the Spot on improves things & if not shes off to the vets.
