  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bunty not eating!

since saturday night Bunty has not been eating. had her at the vet yesterday and she got the usual meds, painkillers, gut stimulants, abx. there has been no improvement and have had to syringe feed her. have to take her back to vet this morning.
am a bit concerned as we lost Lucy just a couple of weeks ago and Bunty shared hutch and run with Lucy (and 2 other buns) there is no other signs of illness.
any ideas suggestions would be appreciated.

Rabbits in stasis need daily meds - esp pain relief and fluids. Fluids are essential for rehydrating the guts. You need to talk to your vet about taking oral pain relief home with you to administer daily, and have them give Bunty some fluids under the skin every time you pop her in for a check up or teach you how to do it at home. If there is no obstruction then the gut motility agents ideally need to be given 8-12 hourly - again orally at home if you can. Probiotics can be very useful too.

Tempting with fresh strongly scented herbs, keeping warm with head pads/water bottles, tummy rubs, colic medicine (gripe water/infacol) and encouraging bun to move about a bit are all things you can do at home to get the guts moving again. If you are able to syringe feed then you should be able to gently give oral fluids too - hydration is so important. Cooled herbal tea works very well as bun likes the taste of peppermint, nettle and fennel teas.
It can take a while for improvement so just hang in there :)

thanks for the advice prettylupin! just got Bunty back from her day at the vets. they gave her a sedative and lo and behold she devoured the food i had handed in with her! they had checked her teeth and she had spurs so she's now had a dental and is back home and has already munched some coriander!:)

Can't offer any more advice than prettylupin.

Lots of fluids and buy anything and everything that she may eat e.g. parsley, thyme (strong smell and got one of mine back on track), spinach, kale, grated carrot, spring cabbage etc. Also try to get her to move around but not stress her too much.

Good luck and sending get well vibes to Bunty.

Edit - you must have posted as I was writing - good to hear she is doing well after her dental.
