Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bald Spots

Little Bit has a bald spot where a human's shoulder would be on him. They are not on one side, but both sides. There is no scaly or sunburnt or anything besides normal skin under there, so: What could be the problem here? Please help, I am worried.

Try and not worry yet.

You said the skin was fine so i doubt it is a skin problem...and its a bit localised for mites. Also the fact its on both sides doesnt sound like its a health problem.

How old is your bun? One of my buns started to get 'thinning' of her fur around her knee kinda areas, the vet said it was just due to old age and cos she ran around so much it wore more.

My current older bun is getting a bald patch at the back of her neck, again im presuming its old age as the vets havent mentioned anything to me.

Could just be a growth hormone kinda thing, i know this is definately not the same, but my female mini lop didnt flow till 9 weeks on one ear and 10 1/2 on the other, and at the back of her head behind her ears there were bold spots that remained for a while, thn suddenly grew, shes got a tuft of very fluffy fur there now! But im guessing this relates to fur growth hormones etc...

Maybe someone else will know, but as i said, it doesn SOUND like anything serious!

HCB,
Thanks so much for the input. It helps a lot in our household. He will be turning two on October 25, 2009. I don't think it's age, hopefully just "wear and tear" like you said. Thanks again!

Some of the most common causes of bald patches here include:
Recent vaccine or other type of injection
Overgrooming from another rabbit
Mounting by another rabbit
mites, lice, fleas

Some rabbits do get bald patches when the are moulting, but if it doesn't grow back or gets worse see a vet to rule out parasites, fungal infections etc.

over possibilities include:

Hormonal or dietary imbalance
ringworm
trauma
