Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Sore hocks?

lottielouise

Wise Old Thumper
Just doing weekly checks, and noticed that All 4 buns have sore hocks, around the ankle area.

Is this normal?

three of them each have a scab, for want of a better word, on one foot, the other is fine. Sophie does however have to be different and just has thinning fur around one hock.

None look red pussy or inflamed, just this scab.

Do you think its to do with accomodation? should then be having more hay in the hutch and run to prevent this? Both are set up on concrete, but each have their litter trays filled with hay and they hay baskets, where they snuggle. Bedrooms have went over to fleecy blankets, do you think this should change back to a couple of inches of hay?
thanks

I noticed yesterday Bo has developed a sore hock, very similar to yours.
Im now applying sudocream and going to get Vet to check it next week when he has vacs :)

To prevent sore hocks the flooring needs to be something deep and soft enough to sink their toes in so that the whole foot supports the rabbits weight otherwise the weight is thrown back onto the point of the hock. Also, it is important that they are not allowed to gain too much weight :)

Thanks guys,

I don't think the buns are overweight they have just had their check ups, and nothing was said. They all seem OK in that department.

I have put the hay back, as they all seemed fine with this. ie no scabby patches, and hope that this will solve it
