Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Having A Scary Fit!!!!!!!

my rabbit is 5 months old. she is free 24/7 but has started weeing on my bed so considered shutting her in her cage. i did this last night and she like had a fit, her head was like nodding to one side then she fell on her back and got back up so i stroked her and she stretched out so i took her out and tried her with some food, she wasint interested and walked into my cupboard when i put her down. she cuddled up very still with her eyes closed so i tried her with her favourite.. celery. she wasnt interested . i really did believe she was going to die. however after about 10 mins she came round and ate her food within seconds as usual, and ate her celerly. her poos were very large and dark, whereas they are usually small and gold. any explanations?
i think it was because she was put in her cage and didnt like it.

She wasn;t in a deep sleep was she?The 1st time I saw my bun dreaming she looked like she was having a fit and i took her to the vets.:lol:B's eyes flutter, then her head rolls, then she falls over[from laying],wakes herself up,sighs then starts again!

If it wasn't her dreaming then it sounds similar to what my Jet occasionaly suffers.

Take her to the vets for a once over but I would also treat for EC.

A 28 day course of Panacur should be sufficient with thourough disinfecting (10% bleach solution) of everything including bowls, litters trays and flooring on days 21 and 28. Some toys may need to be thrown other areas steam cleaned.

To be on the safe side I am treating Jet for 6 weeks as she is quite bad and disinfecting daily with bleach solutions once per week.

Also ask your vet for Metacam as an anti inflammitory and a course of Baytril to rule out an inner ear infection.

Hope she doesn't suffer another again, but if she does it's best to let her come out of it by herself :)

oh right. well she has been fine since. eating, pooing, drinking normally.
should i still take her to the vets?

I would still start her on a 28 day course of Panacur as per my advice above.

The vets would probably advise you to do the same but call them and double check.

If she has another funny turn I'd get her some metacam.

I would still ask the vet about baytril too incase the cause was inner ear infection ;)

She needs to see a vet. If she is experiencing neurological episodes there are other causes besides EC that need to be examined and can only be treated with POMs.

Often something that may stem from CNS inflammation will require an anti-inflammatory drug.

Do you have a good rabbit vet already or do you need help to find one?
