Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blood in the urine?

IloveToffee

Warren Scout
My dad went out to toffee today, and his white mat in his shed was covered in urine and 'blood'. I have checked him all over for cuts but he doesn't have any cuts.
I have read about how eating vegetables containing beta carotine can cause the urine to go from orange to bright red.. he has been eating a lot of kale recently which contains beta carotine and he had lots of it last night.

Has anyone else had this problem? And was the urine bright, blood red?

He is fine and isn't acting poorly in anway, he seems very happy! :S

I think I am going to take him to the vets.

xx thanks

It sounds like orange wee to me. Blood in the urine is either undetectable by the naked eye or is in streaks/clots within the wee.

I won't bother go to the vet. Their urine color always change to red when they eat some exotic plants

It's the same w/ human. When you eat crab, your urine color change to bright yellow

Kale tends to make my two do an orangey type coloured wee. Just keep a close eye but it sounds like the kale to me too. Kale should be given limited too as it is also quite high in calcium.

If there's lots of blood it can totally colour the urine....however you'd still get some evidence of clots (i.e. 'thick' bits). These can be difficult to spot if you don't know what you're looking for though.

I think it's better to be safe than sorry...get any changes checked out by a vet if you're not totally sure. You wouldn't even have to take him into the vets with you - just collect a urine sample and the vet will be able to test it for blood.
