  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

tear duct flush

tickles

Mama Doe
Just wanted to check if this was a normal way to flush them the vet says lillys isnt infected he checked teeth fine he then put a dye in here eyes and said it should run down nose if it was clear (it didnt) so he wanted to do a GA and place a tube up her nose and flush that way does this sound right ??

Sorry I can't help - But I would like to know too.
Eric had his flushed when he was neuetered and I suspect he will have to have it done again at some stage. So it would be good to know how it's done

Mine have always had a canula inserted into the tear duct (at the corner of the eye), then a syringe containing the solution fixed onto the tube. The vet then pushes the plunger on the syringe and the solution comes out of the nose. If the ducts are totally blocked or scarred over then the plunger can't be pushed down.

Is this done when they are awake???

Mine have always been done from the tearduct in the eye downwards too and done whilst the bun is awake. It has to be done by someone who knows what they are doing as this can rupture the duct if it's completely blocked and too much pressure is applied.

Santa has only had hers done once and she was sedated - but she's very tiny and a complete wiggler so it was considered safer to sedate her to lessen the risk of damaging her eyes.

My buns blackie, skye and fudge have all had this done both under GA and awake!
I seen one of them getting done and its a tiny tube that is put DOWN the tearduct and a syringe attached to it filled with liquid is the squirted into the duct! If blocked then the liquid doesnt come out the nose instead it comes up and out the eye! If its not blocked it should come out the nose!!

I have never heard of the tube being inserted up the nose! that sounds more painful!!
Ask your vet if he can do it the other way!!
