  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bunny with sore foot

Young Bun
I have a beautiful 9 week bunny called JP. he was born with a deformed back leg (there is only a couple of cms of foot, no toes, etc) i was told that due to the fact rabbits dont normally carry weight on this part of their foot that it would get sore from time to time......however over the last 3 days he has been hopping round with it held up so it is obviously causing him discomfort. i just wanted to know what a vet could do if i took him there and its not an injury but a birth defect, and i was unsure about what exactely they would be able to do for him.

The Vet can do lots to help starting off with giving pain relief if necessary.
If the deformed limb is causing him pain then he would probably be better off without it. I have 2 'tripod' Bunnies , one missing a front leg the other missing a back leg. They cope perfectly well and binky about like any 4 legged Bunny.

You need to get Baby Bun vaccinated against Myxomatosis and VHD anyway so you can combine the consultation

Good luck :)

agree with jane..but also you could possibly get dressings that would save the leg if thats what you were wanting to do that would cusion the weight put onto it..however if its causing a lot of pain it might be best not being tehre at all xx

yeah the vet might suggest removing it, they can do very well on three legs. good luck with him, hope you get something sorted.
