  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

does anyones rabbit make a wretching sound?

I had one do it - ditto Jane's question: does she move her head forward and open her mouth looking like she is going to be sick when she does it?

Yeah sounds a bit of a worry as bunnies cant vomit, so the reason why she is doing it must be something else, I agree it could be teeth problems or maybe she has something stuck in the back of her mouth and she needs to get it out??

fudge sort of does something similar but normally after he has been grooming himself.....and gets trapped wind so ends up burping (or bottom burping)....

Hmmmm only time I've seen one of my buns doing it she was wretching and drbbling and course I knew they cant be sick so I was very worried. I took her to the vet and she had a virus of some sort that was making her throat very sore. She did have an injection of some sort to help her (cant remember what it was ) and we made sure she had soft easier things to eat and after a few days she got better.
I found it really scary though and phoned the vet the minute I saw her do it the first time. Its definitely not a normal thing to do. I'd definitely get her to the vet for a check over x

Mine appears to hiccups after eating or grooming, but they don't last long. He also 'bottom burps' from time to time. He has never wretched, but does tend to sneeze - I put that down to him getting his own fur up his nose.
He also makes assorted squeaks, grunts, snorts and groans. This completely contradicts what most people think about them being silent.
