  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Snuffles and Baytril

Hazel at RabTowers

Took my new rescue bun to the vets yesterday for a check up.

She was breathing noisily, and the vet listened to her chest and throat. She doesn't think she has anything too serious - her chest is clear - but she gave her an antibiotic shot and some baytril which we started this morning.

Thing is she doesn't seem to be eating much at all. Has anyone had the same experience - is this perhaps normal with baytril? Other than that she seems to be acting normally for her - but I have only had her for a couple of days so hard to tell for sure.

Its possible she is feeling a little stressed out by the recent changes and now being ill.

Keep a close eye on her and monitor what she eats, that she is toileting and look for a decrease in this size or quantity of her stools which could indicate she is going into stasis.

Leave her in peace and quiet and try not to introduce any changes for a few days, e.g new food, animals, people etc.

Is she on probiotics too, to counteract the negative effects of antibiotics on the good gut flora?

Did the Vet check your Buns teeth?
Noisey breathing as result of a runny nose can be caused by Dental problems. Dental problems obviously stop the Bun eating much.

With Baytril anorexia can happen on days 3-4 of treatment but usually resolves thereafter. Your Bun may just be feeling the stress of a new environment, that is enough in itself to set off 'Snuffles' and/or loss of appetite

I haven't been given any probiotics - no one said anything about that:roll:

What would they be, i have been given Excel Lite as she is overweight too.

You try to help a rabbit and then end up spending Xmas worried sick:roll::roll:

Yes, She did ceck ruby's teeth and said they were fine. Wonder if the breathing noise is just stress, or because she is overweight?

Thanks to both you and Sooz for your replies though - especially on Christmas Day - hope you are all having a good time:D:wave:

Probiotics are a supportive measure which replenishes the good gut bacteria which helps with digestion and gut balance etc. The side effect of antibiotics is that it has a negative effect on this good bacteria and can kill it off allowing 'bad' bacteria to multiply and causing stomach upsets. Some rabbit also develop the runs after a course of antibiotics.

The usual types are bio-lapis, Avi-Pro Plus, Pro C or more recently Fiberplex.

All can be brought from your vets or online (non prescription) but P@H sell Vetark Pro C.
