  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nail Clipping mmishap

Bad bad day yesterday. My rabbit McQueen's nail where getting far too long to a point where she would scratch by just putting her paw on my hand so i bot some bunny nail clippers. and yes i guess you could guess what happened, i cut a nail too short and it bleed very badly. I calmed her down and and washed the paw in warm salt water and she seems ok, playing around like normal I'm just wondering if there is something i should do for her? and how do i avoid possible infection?

I cut of half of Zakura's claw once and she was fine:lol:
I poured cold water over the paw to try and stop the bleeding, and later put her in a transport box on a towel until it stopped.
I also used the transport box when Sasuke's mother started breeding (those two are notoriously hard to clip the nails of:roll: )

I did the same yesterday too. He keep flicking his feet and sprayed blood everywhere  It stopped pretty fast though. I put a splodge of corn flour on then squeezed his paw til it stopped :) It will heal fine don't worry :)

Its a good idea to keep corn flour, antibacterial veterinary powder or styptic powder in your first aid kit for nail cutting accidents....it clots the quick pretty quickly.
