Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! Am I pulling out dead hair or good coat???

Bunjovi

New Kit
This is Oreo. A 6 month old dutch bunny who I adopted from a local humane society. Now I read that bunnies shed their baby coats at about 4-6 months. I really don't know if I should be helping my bun and pulling this stuff out???

Whilst rabbits moult every 4 - 6 months, they will manage this moult themselves without any problem. Some people do occassionally give their rabbits a brush when this reaches the lower levels of the back.

Get a bunny-brush and groom her;) They're fully capable of molting their fur on their own, but it can be a good idea to use the brush or you'll end up with fur all over you...wait...you still will:roll:
Also bunnies shed fur about 2 times a year (winter to summer fur and then back) so do expect to see more of this. My doe molted continusly all the way through the summer:shock: It was very much at first, but then gradually became less.
I probably could have knitted my own bunny-fur-clothes out of all the fur they shed:roll:

Yes my Benny has 'tide marks' in his fur somewhere most of the year - he rarely looks nice! If you damp your hands and run them over him that's the best way to get the fur out, then roll your hands together to ball it up.

I think my Lucy has been shedding fur for months but you can't really see a proper moult going on.

But poor little Poppy has a good'un going on. :D It started off last week with a tiny patch on her back, and now it's spreading out and down. It looks so funny cos the old stuff is all fluffy and long and her new fur is all short and sleek. I shouldn't laugh but she looks so weird. She is very good though and will let me pluck her.

I don't think you will be able to pull out new fur unless you are really tugging hard! I pluck loose fur out of my buns, as one of them is prone to stasis when he grooms himself and ingests it. Generally the fur coming out of him is white, fluffy and soft, although his coloured fur comes out a bit too and is coarser :)
