Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Hi
my bunny Benny had upper respiory problem and was seen friday night, today he looked so poorly, hardly eating, head to the floor, breathing heavy. took him back to emergency vet and to my shoch flipped over in the carrier and then at the vet. his head is now totally tilted to one side and the vet diagnosed head tilt.
He has given me baytril, metacam, panacur and canaural for his ears as there was puss in one them. He is in such a sorry state and i have now noticed he eye is flickering from side to side, which in my book it's says is a stroke. He can't lift his head and will not eat or drink as he is so distressed. The vet said he might not pulll through, I am totally distraugt, really want to know if it's possible he'll pull through. i don't want him to suffer and it's killing me watching him. How far should i let this go.
Please any advise or experiences.........

Oh Lisa... I am so sorry, don't know what to say... I had a bunny who used to fit and his eyes would roll back in his head, but he would recover after a few mins... He also had a stroke which didn't leave any permanent damage but caused him to slow dramatically.. Is it head tilt or could it be E cuniculi?? Lets hope Jane is along in a minute.. she will know. Big hugs and nosey rubs coming your way xxxx

MY Noah had head tilt early this year and I suspected a stroke even though he wasn't 3 years old yet. The vet decided to treat him for EC and gave him a course of Panacur which I notice you have said has been prescribed. It has been a long slow recovery but he has made it thorough ( all be it he is quite high maintenance compared to my other buns. If you think you are dealing with a stroke, I would suggest taking him back to the vets to get it confirmed ( or not). The Panacur ( 28 days is probably best rather than 9 which some vets prescribe) will help if it is EC. It must be a real worry and I feel for you having gone through a head tilted bun. I hope he feels better soon. It may be he gets a bit worse before the meds kick in, but sending lots of get well vibes!:D

I haven't got any experience of this & therefore no advice, but just wanted to say i truely hope your little bun pulls through :)

Poor bun, hope things are OK - I have read that the eyes moving rapidly is a sign that bunny is dizzy. Cross my fingers for you.

hiya,

am so sorry to hear about your bunny. I lost a British Giant buck in July like this -same symptoms exactly and my vet did the same thing, gave him panacur in case of EC, and steroid and anti-biotic injections. apparently they symptoms of head-tilt are very very alike those of a stroke and without scans and blood tests etc. they just cant be certain so they treat the symptoms in the hope that they can help the rabbit. My bun started to recover very very quickly from having the injections and the panacur, but he had a relapse after 10 days on both and the vet said it would have been unfair to have let him continue like that. he said the key is if they start to recover and continue to do so, then there's hope with a lot of TLC and extra home care - if they have a relapse, then it's virtually unheard of to have them come through and return to their original selfs.

Just incase it is EC, you can buy panacur rabbit online from www.wormers.co.uk for a fraction of what the vets charge and I routinely treat mine with this now - they say every 3-6 months - i'm going to do it every 6 months as in between I also use ivomectin as my BG's problem all started with ear mites!

I wish you the very best of luck and hope your bunny pulls through!

Good luck and my thoughts are with you. I lost my big rabbit Dylan to EC earlier this year. His eyes tended to flicker/star gaze and he lost his balance which was his main problem he didnt know where his legs were. EC has a long recovery but if they do give it a go so should you. Dyl was paralysed and never made any progress.

I was advised to treat for 9 days 4 x a year by a specialist rabbit vet (it may be worth getting yours referred to an exotics vet although this depends how experienced your vet is - mine wasnt). I wish Id known this before.
