  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

A friend of mine has had one of her rabbits put to sleep today due to myxi  the others have all been vaccinated but obviously they may well come down with it too. Could i pass it onto my rabbits if i go to my friends house then back here does that pose a risk to my buns?

I believed it's passed on by blood sucking insects, such as mosquitoes and possibly fleas... so in that way, most likely not. But have your bunnies been vaccinated against it?

No my bunnies are not vaccinated but i will start a seperate thread about that. :) I just want to find out how contagious this is and whether i could pass it onto them?

It can be spread by fleas so technically yes you could transport them on you from her house to yours but it's not as highly contagious as diseases like VHD.

It's a good idea to treat any cats/dogs regularly for fleas and take precautions against flies.

Vaccinated rabbits are much less likely to catch myxi and if they do it's often the atypical nodular strain which isn't usually fatal.
