Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bunnie amputee

Hi
My 10 year old Mr Bunnie has had a dislocated wrist. The vet splinted it for about 8 wks now. He has been to vet to have new splint and to keep a check on it each week. It isnt getting better though and vet is suggesting he has his little leg amputated!
I have concerns which I have spoken to vet about but wondered what this forum would think.
I'm worried he's too old for the operation. vet says he's very healthy and should be ok.
Amputation seems a bit drastic. There must be something else we can do to save his little leg. Any ideas?
Anyone know a specialist vet just for bunnies in Surrey?

does he hop around with it anyway or does it cause him discomfort?
Just wondering if it be a problem to leave it or if it isnt nice for him.

 Can you post a pic of his poorly leg? I don't know if it's a good idea to actually amputate now due to the time lapse and also his age. Can he use the leg? It may well have set in a position that he can use and get around with :D We have had a few buns who have managed with legs set out at a funny angle:D

Thanks for the replies.
He's using it a bit. he had a new splint on Monday and wasn't happy with it at all for a few days but he seems to be getting happier with it.
I live in Epsom and I have made an appointment with another different vet for this afternoon, RCVS approved in small animal care from the link posted on this site.

Now our Jasper had the same sort of splint and it was in his wrist as well - it had been on for a while and when we got him we took him to our vets - after x-rays it was decided that the bone had actually set in a strange way but it was not causing him any damage - and that to try and fix it would be worse:? Amputation wasn't even an option as he was using it and other than a bit of arthritis he is fine:D I find he flicks it more when he is on the concrete but other than that he is fine:D In fact, the boy loves to jump in and out of the washing machine:roll:
To be honest, if he is using it I would leave him be - it's a lot for him to have to go through at his age and could well be uneccesary :D

This lady uses an RSPCA vet who specialises in rabbits (I had the info from here last year after my frenchies spay went disastourously wrong)
Might be worth a call?

Good luck for your bunny - amputation sounds quite drastic for a sprained wrist:(

Well Mr Bunnie went for a second opinion and they said a fibreglass plaster would fully imobilise the (dislicated) joint and allow it to heal. Although he said he'd never done it or seen it done.
Our original vet thinks that's a bad idea because the plaster would have to stay on for some time and we wouldnt know what was going on underneath and could interfere with pressure points and cause much worse problems.
So now we have conflicting opinions.
We've agreed/decided to continue with the spilint for now. He's using it to balance and without the splint he wont put his foot down at all. So we're sticking with the splint, going to try and get it to stay on for as long as possible so it gets a chance to set. soft tissue takes 12 weeks.
We're determined to get it to work because we just can't put him through an amputation poor little fella.
He's sitting under the buddleia at the mo munching carrot tops.:)
